Hawaiian Flowers

Thought I’d try a Hawaiian Theme in honor of my first visit to Hawaii. The design is from Anita Good design. I used Polymesh no show and batting for the stabilizer. Also used a framing technique in stead of binding. Overall I am ok with the result. One thing that I noticed was the difficulty in truly aligning the tiles. I think the inner corners would work better if they were not cut out.

There are a couple of things that one needs to remember when doing a Hawaii theme that I learned from looking at the quilts in Hawaii. First, all most all of their designs repeat the same block over. The designs trended to be similar to the designs shown here but a tad bit simpler and one color. I spoke with a lady about the echo effect. In a full size quilt the echo would be abut an inch in a traditional setting. Most of the quilts used a simple echo in a white or cream colored thread on white or cream background. I did see one unusual quilt that used sea designs in a contrasting thread instead of the typical echo. Pretty cool effect but definitely not traditional. Colors are bold but not necessarily bright. While there were a lot of blues and yellows, there were also a lot of deep reds
